Day of Awaking!
“Happy fifth Birthday!” Trint’s family wished him as he came down from his room.
“Thank you guys!” smiling as he viewed his family before him. Warmth seeped into his chest as his cheeks reddened and a tear hung in his eyes.
Every year would be the same. He would be called down with a knock on his door from his older brother telling him to wake up. As he appeared, his family would shout together wishing him a happy birthday. Then they would all sit down for breakfast made with all his favorite dishes. After the morning meal, they would walk the cobbled streets of Woruc heading toward the shopping district.
Since learning to read, Trint asked his parents for books. So every birthday his mother’s gift to him was a new book for his ever growing collection. His father’s gifts usually had something to do with fighting while his brother would come up with a unique gift that would always surprise Trint.
After finishing the mouth-watering meal of fried Anole with sides of steamed Pilo and scrambled eqqz, the Draco family would head out into town.
“Little Dragon, what book you looking to get this time?” asked Rodrick while using the nickname he chose for Trint.
“It’s a secret. You will be amazed when you see it!” winking as he said this Trint hopped alongside his family. He is usually a calm and quiet child with a demeanor not fitting his age. Yet, knowing that soon he will get a new book made him act a bit childish.
As Aaron Pendragon in his past life, reading was his only escape from his depressing life. However, now it has become a hobby that allows him to learn more about this new world and, of course, go on adventures.
What is great about these adventure stories is that they are not fantasies, but actual tales of magical journeys in this world. They only further Trint’s desire for adventure.
Hanging outside of a three story brick building swings a wooden sign with the name of the largest bookstore for the second district of Woruc.
Passing through the large wooden door a man with skin that has lost all elasticity decades ago, sits behind the front desk. With faded green shaggy hair and his eyes closed, he sits motionless. Around the man is an aura that gives the feeling as if he is knocking on death’s door. Yet, as Trint passes the doors threshold the man smiles and without opening his eyes he whispers “Welcome to my garden.” Even though the man seemed to only whisper the words, they arrived clear and precise in the airs of the Draco family.
“Greetings Inquisitor” replied the Draco family as they slightly bowed. The owner of the store is a well-known Earth mage who has reached the inquisitor rank in magic. His name is Evzahr. Though why an Inquisitor would run a bookstore is an unknown secret that many have tried to unravel.
After greeting Evzahr, Trint disappeared amongst the jungle of books while his family waits for him. Honing in on the isle that has the story ‘Nymph of Darkness’, Trint’s mind flashes with excitement. The story is about a spell blade who during his first adventure falls into the Tracarc Caves where he comes across a Nymph called Adrasteia.
What excites Trint about this book is that the spell blade in the story was only 15. He had many more adventures and later ended up ruling a kingdom to the south. The spell blade is now known as the Conquer of shadows, a name he acquired from his first adventure. With his many adventures and accomplishments, young adventures desire to be like him.
Trint can hardly wait to set out on his own adventure and meet the many races. While carving his name into history, he dreams of standing atop the world as others aspire to be like him.
After finding the book, he weaved himself through the rivers of bookshelves and reached the counter. His mother already gave him the amount needed, so Trint handed the inquisitor 3 nickel pieces and 10 copper rubles. The money in this world is called Royal Aluruna. It is broken up into six different coins. The currency in ascending order is the Copper ruble, Nickel piece, Bronze petal, Silver bit, Golden orb and the Platinum seed.
Leaving the bookstore with his new adventure, Trint looks to his father and asks “Dad, so what is your gift this year?”
Brom excitedly exclaims “Time for the tournament!” The gift Brom has chosen this year for Trint is the Conquers Competition that is held every five years. This event allows any warrior that desires to see who is the strongest to fight for the title of Conquer. Those who succeed at winning the competition received 5 silver bits and an enchanted weapon.
Walking from the store to the arena located in the 4th district, the Draco family was able to get in as honored guest. They were seated to the front near the stage thanks to his father being an instructor for the Legarts Warriors Institute. As the competition progressed, Trint rooted for a warrior who wielded a great sword the length of his body.
As the evening approached, the competition ended and the Dracos family heads home. Trint was lost in his daydreams of the fights from earlier. Unfortunately, the one he rooted for lost in the finals to a warrior who wielded twin blades. Yet, the fights mesmerized him and the way the warriors would fight made his heart race with each swing of their weapon. Trint decided that one day he too would stand on that stage and aim to be titled the Conquer. He had stars in his eyes with the thought of being the winner someday.
“Mom…Dad…I know it’s late, but I want to borrow Trint so I can give him his gift” said Rodrick with excitement in his eyes.
“Very well but don’t be too long, I will have dinner ready in a bit so hurry back,” says Mary with a sigh to her son.
“Don’t go too far” reminds Brom before waving his hands f0r them to hurry on.
With the okay from their parents, Rodrick leads Trint out of the city and towards the nearby woods. These woods called the Froh Wilds are nothing like their name. The woods near the city have no local monsters and the creatures that live there are only small animals.
The Froh wilds are a forest that sits beside the city of Woruc, they have been there for the city long before Woruc was established. They have been used for training long ago however very few beast remain after years of training. The woods are now home to only the weakest creatures. The forest was mostly used for materials the city needs such as wood.
Walking amongst the Spiky Cedar trees as well as other trees and plants, Rodrick started to explain the gift he is showing Trint.
“So where I am taking you little dragon is a secret and my favorite spot ever. So don’t show anyone,” said Rodrick.
“Okay!” replied Trint as he followed behind his brother.
‘I wonder what makes this place so special that he wants it kept a secret,’ thought Trint.
As they walked they chatted about different things until they were only a short distance away from their destination. However, after Rodrick told Trint that they were about to be at the hidden spot, an angelic voice echoed in Trint’s mind.
‘Come to me… come to me.’
As if hypnotized by the sound that resonated through his mind, Trint began to wander off while Rodrick was not paying attention.
In a daze, Trint wandered through the woods until he reached a clearing. In the center stood a statue of a woman dressed in a pure white gown with a veil covering her face. As he stepped in the clearing, his mind regained its clarity. Yet, Trint was confused as to what just occurred. Trying to comprehend what happened, he looked back and forth. His eyes landed on a statue of a woman and a sense of warmth flowed from her, like the calming warmth from his mother.
“How beautiful!” whispered Trint afraid of disturbing the beauty of the sculpture.
‘Why is something so perfectly made hidden within this forest,’ thought Trint as he questioned the reason for this magnificent sculpture being here.
He was curious as to why this statue was the only thing within the clearing and why he felt a calming warmth come from the object before him. Trint inched his way forward. Arriving before the statue, he felt a feeling of Deja Vu. However, he could not place the reason for it.
“Have I been here before?” questioned Trint.
As he gazed at the statue, he was trying to make out who it was carved after and to see if there was any engraving to the artwork. Looking up and down the sculpture he saw a hidden area at the bottom with a smudge on it. Guessing that underneath the smudge was information about the statue, he decided to clean off the smudge. As soon as his hand touched the statue, a female voice spoke to him.
“Awaken!” the voice said. The female voice shook Trint to his very core and without warning the world began to shake around him.
From the shadows emerged an essence of darkness that swam towards Trint. As it passed through areas with light, the darkness swallowed it.
From the sun, Trint felt a warmth, unlike anything he felt before pour towards him.
However, from the heavens crashed a power of tribulation down upon him.
The three converged at the same time on their target. As they seeped into him, his hair and eyes began to change color. First, was a darkness that was devoid of all light. Next, they changed from black to a shining white with a brilliance that lit his surroundings. With the final element, his hair and eyes took their final change. Trint’s hair was kissed by the heavens and changed to that of a royal purple. His eyes held a sparkle of a majestic violet.
Around his body swirled three different essences which were lightning, light and darkness mana. From them came three different sensations that were of the warmth of the holy light, coldness that comes with the emptiness of darkness and the frightening power that emits from lightning.
Almost as fast as the event came it disappeared. As soon as the changes with Trint’s hair and eyes happened, everything calmed down. While the changes occurred, Trint had been screaming in agony. The mana had poured into Trint’s mind and began to rapidly transform it. For mages the mind is the focus of their mana because the mind is the sole of a human. The sole is the means for how mages manipulate mana, they must be integrated with the element that has chosen them. This integration is like tearing down one’s sole only to build up again.
From the pain, Trint’s mind could no longer hold out and he fell to the ground as he blacked out.
Hearing his younger brother screams, Rodrick rushed towards the sound. His younger brother was lying unconscious in an empty field. However, Rodrick could almost not recognize him because Trint’s appearance glowed with the royalty of the heavens.
With Trint unconscious, Rodrick had to carry him home. Fear shook Rodrick because a mage’s awakening usually happens when they are ten turns old. With his brother being so young, he feared that Trint could not withstand the change and possibly die from the shock.
Rushing home Rodrick bursts through the front door with tears in his eyes he sets Trint on the table. From the living room Brom and Mary rush to the dining table as they see their son unconscious and their other son in tears. Fear takes them as they ask what happened.
“What happened why is Trint unconscious?” asked Brom with worry in his voice.
“I don’t know one second he was behind me and the next he was screaming in a open field. I think he has awakened to magic.” With tears falling down Rodrick felt guilt in his heart blaming himself for not keeping a better watch over his little brother.
“His magic has awakened!” exclaimed Mary with a tremble in her voice from fear.
Hearing what his wife and son said Brom looked at his son and sure enough, the sign of magic was evident in his boy’s hair. The once brown hair was now an amethyst color which meant his son was a mage with the affinity of lightning.
As Trint’s family discussed what happened Trint started to regain consciousness, “Where am I?”
With his feeble voice, the room quieted for a moment before shouts of joy were made.
Seeing her son awake, Mary’s worries were cured, she hugged Trint.
“Are you ok?” questioned Mary with worry in her voice as she hugged him.
“I am fine other than a major headache,” replied Trint as he tried to sit up. However, the pain in his head kept him from rising.
“What happened?” asked Trint as he looked at his family who had smudges of tears on their faces.
After asking Trint received the information about what he experienced he learned that it was called an awakening and that he was a mage that could control magic. They also explained that there were two types of mages those with one affinity and those with two.
Remembering that he had felt three types of mana flow into him he asked, “Has there ever been more than two affinity’s for one person?”
“No,” replied his mother.
Curious she asked, “Do you have more than two?”
Trint decided to only say he had two since there had never been three affinities for one person.
“I only have two affinities” replied Trint, with firmness in his voice
Shocked that their son was not only a mage but a dual mage they were curious what his other affinity was.
“What is your other affinity?” asked Brom with a sparkle of intrigue in his eyes.
However, Trint did not know what kind of magic there was.
I am not sure what kind it is. What kind of magic is out there?” asked Trint with curiosity.
Trint’s father explained that there was elemental magic. Then there was spirit magic, and there was special magic.
They then explained that each type of magic could be recognized by the color of the mage’s eyes and hair.
Trint looked at his mother and father and asked.
“So are you a water mage mom and you a fire mage dad?”
“Yes,” replied Trint’s parents in unison.
“How can I check my other element,” asked Trint.
Mary then explained how to start training in magic which was to meditate on the mana in the world, she explained that he would only be able to feel the mana that he could control while all the other types would be untouchable.
She then instructed him to focus his mind on the mana around him. Closing his eyes he felt the coldness of darkness, the warmth of light and the tingling sensation of lightning. Understanding which types of magic he could interact with he told his family that he could also use light magic. Dark magic he decided to keep as a secret.
Excited by this news, the Draco family stayed up late and had a big feast in honor of Trint.
2 Weeks after Awaking.
The sky a dark blue tinted with a hint of orange that creeps from the east. Carried by the wind, a chill hugs all those who have nestled in their beds yearning for a few more minutes of sleep. On the streets, the drip…plop beat of past rain falling into the leftover puddles echoes through alleyways. Floating through the air is the smell of bread roasting in the ovens.
While most are still dancing within their dreams, a young boy meditates in his dark silent room. Around him swirls a dark essence that seeps within his pores. As he breathes in, the essence flows into his lungs and with each exhale only air devoid of the rich essence is what leaves.
“Refreshing” breathed Trint as he circulated mana through and in his body.
Each morning since his awakening, Trint would wake before the first glimpse of dawn. During this time, he would meditate on the essence or otherwise referred to as mana in the air around him. He would take around thirty minutes for each element he was in control of.
Starting with his dominant element, lighting, Trint would be surrounded by a powerful amount of mana filled with currents of purple sparks of electricity. After his dominant element, he would then meditate on his light element.
With his focus on the light essence, his hair and eyes would change from purple to a bright white and his room would be filled with a warmth similar to the feel of the sun. The mana that would circulate in the room would glow like the sun and illuminate his dark room.
Yet, as he transitioned to his final element, his hair would change again but this time from white to that of a pure onyx. Around him, his dark mana would swallow the light that brightened his room only moments ago. With it a chill would seep in from the darkness. Concluding his meditation, his appearance would revert back to that of purple haired and purple eyed boy. This was because lightning was his dominant attribute.
For mages that have more than one element or magic affinity, one of them would be the dominant element. This would be the magi’s default color that displays through their eyes and in their hair.
Meditation was not something he was used to doing. Yet, with the recent practice, he began to understand the flow of mana a bit better.
Through meditation, he can now feel the mana in the air and can semi-control it like he did the night before with the thunderstorm. That is all he can do without the knowledge of the required chants needed to evoke spells.
“Even though I cannot cast spells yet, being able to control three different elements is amazing! Though I must not let others know, for now I will continue to pretend to be a dual mage of lightning and light magic,” muttered Trint while he began to get ready since his family will be waking soon.
Ever since his fifth birthday when he awakened to three elements, Trint had pretended to only be a dual mage as there has never been a tri mage. So as not to raise unneeded attention, he decided that until he was stronger he would keep his darkness attribute a secret.
‘In five years, I will try to attend the Hilia Magic Institute. So I can wait for now to learn spells’ thought Trint.
The magic school only accepted the gifted or the rich this was a common thing in life. Those that could not get in would have to learn from a parent that has the same element or from a mentor who has the same element.
The reason the mentor or parent had to be of the same element was because those that have magic of a certain affinity would not understand the flow of mana another affinity used. This was because each affinity’s mana had a different flow from each other.
“But I must not waste my time playing as a kid. Until my tenth turn, I will learn the ways of the warrior!” declaring this Trint decided to ask his father to teach him how to fight as a warrior.
